Entering into the realm of integrated storage systems we light upon the pick module, where product is delivered on pallets to a pick zone for opening and building orders.

A pick zone will incorporate rack-based storage with conveyor, and a number of technologies or methods may be used by personnel to unload product for transportation through the distribution process. Such methods include the software assisted pick-to-light, pick-to-voice, RF-scanning, or good old fashioned hand picking.

We say it incorporates “rack-based” storage because a pick zone can be fed by pallet flow, carton flow, or package flow modules, depending on the size of the product coming in. Pallet flow, for instance, may consist of rails with heavy duty rollers for conveying pallets to the pick zone. Cartons or packages are best conveyed on skatewheel beds that can speedily slide product toward personnel for distribution.
